Pershing Middle School and Project Lead the Way have joined together in order to create an activity oriented middle school curriculum, known as Gateway To Technology® where students learn math, science, and technology. This course establishes the connection between math and college prep science in order to give students a solid background in engineering and technology. Students learn the basics of engineering through hands on projects that allow them to discover how Engineering meets the needs of people today.

Students discover the engineering method in which ideas get transformed to the actual product. Students study this process by developing and testing out their own ideas that solve a real world problem. This class offers a variety of projects that follow the five units of inquiry; Science Of Technology, Design and Modeling, Magic of Electrons, Automation and Robotics, and Flight and Space. Each unit consists of its own projects that test the knowledge of science and math. Students apply their knowledge and skills in order to make the best product possible. This particular middle school curriculum introduces the basics of engineering in order to get students to be more inquisitive as to how real world problems are solved.

These units for Gateway To Technology® are designed to challenge and engage the natural curiosity of students understanding for how things work. Each unit consists of its own project that allows students to follow the process in which it goes from idea to the actual product.

Science of Technology: Students apply scientific principles and concepts of simple machines and energy to solve real world problems. Students learn how simple machines make for more complex machines that are used in the development of products today. Students apply their knowledge by building a mousetrap machine that incorporates these more simple machines in order to accomplish a simple task.

Design and Modeling: Students use geometry, problem solving skills, and management skills to design and develop product prototypes. Students learn Autocad: Inventor software where they sketch, design, build, and test their solution prototypes.

Magic of Electrons: Students learn about basic digital circuitry and build a simple circuit, parallel circuit, and series circuit in order to understand the flow of electrons and how electricity and energy are created. In this unit students also question ways in which energy can be created more efficiently. Students follow this idea by building a Maglev where their vehicle uses magnets on a magnetic track in order to create a substantial amount of natural energy for their vehicle to move along the track.

Automation and Robotics: Students learn RoboPro Software in order to design and build automated systems that incorporate electrons, physics, and robotics in order to develop a an understanding of the mechanical world. Students build a remote controlled car that is moves mechanically through a maze in the shortest time possible.

Flight and Space: Students explore the technology of aeronautics, propulsion, and rocketry. Here students will design, build, and test their own water bottle rocket in order to achieve the farthest distance possible.

Overall, this class provides a way for students to discover and understand how things work as well as the process in which ideas get transformed to an actual a solution prototype. Engineering provides a way for students to develop and further their knowledge in math, science, and technology and bridge the gaps between these core subjects. So, are you ready for the next generation of Engineers?
